Have Peter Gunn will travelThe Ottawa Sun, 20 Sep 2006. (Scans: Page 1 Page 2) By Allan Wigney Rage. A car chase or two. And, according to Reverb Syndicate guitarist James Rossiter, it all wraps up with the hero getting the girl, "who turns out to be a double-agent, after we all thought she was working for the enemy." Operation: Jet Set!, the twangy debut release from the groovy local quartet that also includes lead guitarist Mike Bradford, bassist Jeff Welch and drummer Mike Rifkin, has got everything you could want in the latest Flint or Matt Helm flick. Except, that is, for the flick. "We are a band that creates soundtracks, but the things we're writing soundtracks for don't exist," Rossiter helpfully explains. "We like all things '60s," Welch adds. "It's all about that Our Man Flint attitude -- the swing, the so-hip-it-hurts attitude." One need only sample the band's music -- cool, surf-style instrumentals that would make Hank B Marvin and his fellow Shadows proud -- to determine that their story checks out. Song titles reference such '60s chic pop-culture phenomena as The Prisoner and Get Smart. Onstage, the band weaves a storyline through its between-song patter. And plans are afoot to bring that story more directly to disc -- just as the band recently presented a music-and-dialogue radio play on CKCU. "For the first six months that we were together," Welch says, "we had more ideas for shtick and song titles than we had actual songs. The songs took a while to catch up to the gimmick. But they're about even now." (c) 2006 The Ottawa Sun. |
